Editor’s Note: At this time each year we pause to remember Commander Eric Soares, co-founder of the Tsunami Rangers. As the poem says, “What is precious, is never to forget”.
The Truly Great
by Stephen Spender
I think continually of those who were truly great.
Who, from the womb, remembered the soul’s history
Through corridors of light, where the hours are suns,
Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit, clothed from head to foot in song.
And who hoarded from the Spring branches
The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.
What is precious, is never to forget
The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs
Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.
Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light
Nor its grave evening demand for love.
Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit.
Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields,
See how these names are fêted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.
Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.
El Rey says
In our hearts, souls, smiles and waves forever!
We love you Erikur, Don Diego Cien Fuegos!
Moulton Avery says
I think about Eric often. I will never forget his kindness and generosity in welcoming me back into sea kayaking after my absence of many years. Ditto his ringing endorsement of my 1991 Cold Shock article in Sea Kayaker magazine – the only supportive voice in a sea of negative comments. Or his unwavering support a decade ago when I was just getting the National Center for Cold Water Safety off the ground. The last time we connected was the night before his proposed surgery. He was, as always, positive and upbeat about it. The following day, a call from Chris Cunningham brought me to tears. Eric was gone. But the ray of sunshine he cast has stood test of time and I feel its warmth today as I type this.
Nancy Soares says
Thanks for your comment, Moulton, and for your enduring loyalty to Eric’s memory. It means a lot. He would have been proud of you for all you’ve done with the Center. His legacy lives on in people like you, carrying the sport of sea kayaking, safety, and education forward.
